Mayor Bloomberg Signs Approval of Chinatown BID

Chinatown leaders joined Mayor Bloomberg
at City Hall on Sept 27 for the official signing of
the bill to create a Chinatown BID(Business
Improvement District) in New York City.
New
York City now joins the ranks of 1800+ communities
around the world who had seen improvement and success
from their BID. A BID is a time-tested, time-proven
tool to keep neighborhoods clean, become more
competitive, attract more visitors and improve living
conditions while helping local businesses.
September 21, 2011
After the
City Council Finance Committee voted unanimously 16 -
0 in support of the Chinatown BID, the full New York
City Council also gave its unanimous support
with a 50 - 0 vote!

Lower Manhattan editorials support the Chinatown
BID!:
With
the N.Y.C. Council soon to vote on whether or not to
approve the formation of the Chinatown Business
Improvement District, we would like to register our strong
support for a ‘yes’ vote on the B.I.D.
We believe that the Chinatown B.I.D. will lead to an
improved quality of life for the district’s businesses and
residents, as well as tourists, who frequently go out of
their way to travel to a neighborhood that has an identity
unlike any other.

THE FUTURE OF CHINATOWN IS IN YOUR HANDS
The community is just weeks
away from creation of a District Management Association responsive to the
neighborhood's needs.
-
We keep the $1,900,000 million
allocated post 9/11 for Chinatown in Chinatown.
-
Small businesses get a voice.
A district management association can improve
communication with government agencies
-
We can attract more visitors to
the neighborhood with clean streets.
A conservative estimate of 5,000,000 to
7,000,000 visitors expected to visit Lower Manhattan annually.

Chinatown community leaders brave the elments on their way to
January 26th City Planning Commission to support for the BID
(Crain's
March 2, 2011)

With the support of grants, some
very effective programs have been implemented on behalf of the
Chinatown community. These include Clean Streets, the first
sustained effort to keep the neighborhood clean, and
world-class events like Taste of ChinatownSM, which attract
visitors, and revenue, from around the world.
With funding for these programs running out by 2010, and
with previous attempts to sustain similar programs
unsuccessful, Chinatown has reached a fork in the road.
Our hard work over the past four years has
proven that Chinatown is capable of helping itself. The
BID is a time-tested method that will make
current improvements permanent and ensure the future of this
historic neighborhood.
When considering a BID for Chinatown,
remember that change is inevitable, but it can be managed.
Remember that all choices have costs, benefits and tradeoffs.
